Show Your Dog to the World
Posted by Clare Bristow
The SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International) has launched a PetStyle Contest to promote its mission of raising the awareness of the abuse of animals and to eradicate the euthanasia of healthy and adoptable companion animals.
By submitting a glamour shot (or ten - who can choose only 1 favorite picture of their dog?) to the PetStyle web site you could win a trip for two to Beverly Hills. If you are thinking of entering, photos need to be submitted by Friday 6 July.
Need help taking photos of your dog?
Whilst the PetStyle competition is only open to American residents, who needs a competition as an excuse for taking pictures of their dogs?
Here are some tips for taking dog photos courtesy of the ASPCA:
-
Always take your dog's photo at eye level - your dog's head and body will look more in proportion than if you take the photo looking down on him;
-
Try taking the photos outside in natural light - it just makes your dog look better - and remember to have the sun behind you;
-
Get your dog to look at the camera by having some treats handy - use them to get his attention and take the photo whilst he's looking towards you (easier to do if you have someone to help you!);
-
Make sure the background is in contrast to the color of your dog's coat;
-
Dog photos often suffer from green eye (the dog equivalent of red eye) - to avoid this try and take the photos outside in natural daylight and avoid using a flash. If you have to use a flash, diffuse it by putting a tissue over the flash; and
-
Be patient - it takes many photos to get one good one!
Here's another web site for showing off your dog photos - DoggySnaps - which is run by DogsTrust, a UK based dog charity. There are over 18,000 photos on the web site, and they are all very cute!
