Dog Treat Recipe – Lemon and Walnut Slices

lemon-and-walnut-slices-1Being a very wet and windy weekend here in New Zealand, Zoe, Fritz and I entertained ourselves with some more indoor games, mainly Find It, and making [tag-tec]dog treats[/tag-tec].

I tried out a new [tag-tec]dog treat recipe[/tag-tec], Lemon and Walnut Slices which were a hit with the dogs as we had to play the game many times over!

Here’s the recipe; preparation and cooking time is under half an hour and you can freeze the uncooked mixture for use at a later time:

  • 1 ¾ cups plain flour;
  • 10 ml toasted wheat germ;
  • 150 ml (1/2 cup) brown sugar;
  • 60 ml (1/4 cup) sesame seeds;
  • The zest of one lemon;
  • 60 ml butter; and
  • 125 ml (½ cup) ground walnuts.

If you need to toast the wheat germ, spread it out on a baking sheet and pop in a hot oven for just a few minutes – remove the baking sheet as soon as the wheat germ changes color.

  • Add all the ingredients and mix together well – I tend to use my hand to combine the ingredients as you can gently knead the mixture into a soft dough;
  • Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces, and roll each piece into a log;
  • Slice the log into half inch slices and lay on a lightly greased baking tray and bake for 12 minutes at 200ºC (375ºF);
  • Make sure the treats are cold before using!

You don’t have to cook all the logs – wrap each one in a piece of wax paper and freeze until needed. Remember to thoroughly defrost the logs before baking them.

  1. These look delicious but Vets say that walnuts are very bad for dogs.

  2. Hi Allison, many thanks for your comment.

    The nuts from the Black Walnut tree (a native of eastern North America) can you make your dog ill when the seed hulls are consumed – causing stomach upset and diarrhea – but I’ve not found any evidence that they are any more toxic than this.

    Walnuts sold in shops for use in cooking come from the Persian Walnut Tree, and these are not toxic to dogs – though if he eats too many your dog may get a tummy upset as walnuts do have a high fat content.

  3. I do not believe it is a healthy idea posting reipes for dogs that contain wanuts ! As Some Walnuts , macadamian nuts , chocolate , grapes and raisins should NOT be given to dogs …you’ll make them sick !

  4. Hi Sandy, thanks for your comment.
    From the comment I posted above you’ll see that I have clarified the point re walnuts, and also the quantity used in the recipe is so small that it’s unlikely to make your dog sick.
    Giving your dog any food that he’s not used to can give him an upset stomach.
    I agree that raisins and chocolate can prove fatal for your dog and because of that you won’t find recipes that include these ingredients on this site.
