Thinking about torn dog toenails really makes me shudder - I know how painful it is when I tear my own nails, and torn nails are just as painful for your dog.
How do you know when your dog has torn his nail?
The signs are any of the following: a bleeding paw, your dog limping, licking and biting at his paw and possibly some whining due to the pain.

Dog Ear Problems Part 3 - Treatment and Prevention

Once your vet has diagnosed the reason for your dog's ear problem, he will prescribe a treatment.
All treatment's will start with a thorough cleaning of the ear canal. This is important for a number of reasons:
- applying medication to the skin of a clean ear increases its effectiveness;
- it removes any remaining discharge in your dog's ear, which he would otherwise find irritating and encourage further scratching;
- if left would encourage further bacteria and yeast infections; and
- the ear discharge may react with an antibiotic that is prescribed thereby making the treatment ineffective.
Once the ear is clean, further treatment will depend on the cause of the ear problem:

Dog Ear Problems Part 2 - the diagnosis

Your vet will diagnose your dog's ear problems by carrying out a number of tests.
It may not be possible to get an immediate diagnosis and further procedures may be required - I've summarized below what you can expect from your first visit to your vet and the additional tests that may be required.
If you don't understand what your vet is doing and/or why he is performing certain tests don't be afraid to ask him - and keep asking until you understand. By fully understanding you may be able to tell him something about your dog's history or habits that can speed up, or help with, the diagnosis.
