Meet Bernard the Miniature Schnauzer
Posted by Clare Bristow | 2 Comments
I'd like to introduce you to Bernard, an adorable mini Schnauzer who has his own blog over at Miniature-Schnauzers.co.uk.
Bernard's blog records his daily adventures and it's an entertaining read; it takes me back to when Zoe was a puppy and got up to similar antics.
I shall keep checking in with Bernard to see how the toilet training, chewing, and puppy training progress . . . in the meantime here is a video of Bernard playing in the kitchen.

Blue Green Algae - it's killing our dogs

I read this Toxic Algae Poisoning Alert today on the Cool Dog Hall of Fame. The post tells the heart rending story of how a dog owner recently lost his Border Collie to blue green algae poisoning after a swimming trip to a local river.
Earlier this week in my article on 5 Water Safety Tips I highlighted the danger of dogs drinking water from stagnant ponds and slow flowing rivers. Sadly, this story shows how real the danger is.

Dog Food Ingredients Revealed - new study reveals the rubbish we are giving to our dogs

The Consumer Wellness Center, a non-profit organization in the US, has published a comprehensive report on the nutritional quality of 570 pet food ingredients.
The ingredients of 448 popular pet foods sold in the US were analyzed for nutritional quality and frequency of use. The report analyses the data in a number of ways, but I think the two most important lists are:
- pet food ingredients by rating - 5 stars down to 1 star where 5 stars are given to the best quality ingredients;
- worst pet food ingredients - all the one star ingredients are listed, these are low quality and hazardous ingredients.
This report gives us the information we need to take control over what we are feeding our dogs - please use it to protect the health of your dog.
This is what I'll be doing today:
- Listing the ingredients in the food I currently give to Zoe and Fritz;
- Looking at the rating given to each ingredient; and
- Consider changing foods if the first five listed ingredients (these usually make up the bulk of the product) do not get a high rating.
I'll let you know what I find out.
Here is a link to the report Pet Food Ingredients Revealed!, which was compiled by pet food formulator Dr. Lisa Newman and consumer health advocate Mike Adams.
