Why Good Nutrition is Vital for Dogs With Cancer

Nutrition plays a vital role in your dog's fight against cancer.

As mentioned in the article about dog cancer treatment options , the primary aim of dog cancer treatment is to provide a good quality of life for your dog.

One of the indicators your vet will use to determine your dog's life is quality is his appetite (note 1). Should your dog lose his appetite, and as a consequence eats infrequently, his body condition will worsen. Dogs with poor body condition do not respond well to, and take longer to recover from, cancer treatments. Overall their quality of life will be poor.

Feeding your dog an anti-cancer diet, and doing what you can to help your dog maintain his appetite will certainly help him in his cancer battle.

A diagnosis of cancer brings with it a roller coaster of emotions, and one of the strongest is the feeling of hopelessness.

Your dog will now be dependent upon you more than ever to make the right decisions for him, so here are 10 tips for dealing with your dog being diagnosed with cancer.

1. Take Charge of the Situation

A cancer diagnosis does not mean a death sentence for your dog. Many cancers are curable and for those that aren't there are treatment options that can give your dog many months, sometimes years, of good quality life.

Don't deny your emotions, but resolve to take charge of your dog's care and do whatever you can to give him the best chance of recovery with the minimum amount of pain and suffering.

Dog Cancer - Symptoms and Diagnosis

This is the second article in a series this month on canine cancer. In the Facts About Canine Cancer I highlighted the fact that cancer can occur in any part of your dog's body, and multiple tumors can grow at each cancer site.

Because of this, it's not easy to give definitive symptoms of cancer; however, the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) has identified 10 common signs of cancer.

It's a good idea to become familiar with the symptoms listed below and start taking notice of how your dog presently looks, feels and behaves so that you'll be able to spot any changes. This doesn't have to be an onerous task, just become more alert to any changes as you bath, groom, exercise and watch your dog.
