Finding a Good Puppy Class
Posted by Clare Bristow
[tag]Puppy classes[/tag] are great not only for first time dog owners, but second and third time around owners too. The first six months of a puppy's life are invaluable for teaching him good habits - your puppy is a like a sponge at this age, soaking up everything you teach him. Every opportunity you have to socialize him should be taken.
Whilst I made a few mistakes with the class I chose for Zoe, they did provide good support for me. Each week I could offload my frustrations with toilet training progress, chewing, whining, biting etc., and the people I talked to not only understood what I was going through but could empathize too!
So, what do you learn at puppy class, and how do you find a good one?

Social Networking Going to the Dogs
Posted by Clare Bristow
A trial will be carried out in Boston in the next few months to see if the city can help its dog owners get better acquainted with each other.
Dogs participating in the trial will have little tags on their collars which will allow data about them, and their owner, to be exchanged with another dog wearing a similar tag. The information will be exchanged when the dogs come within a certain distance of each other.
Once home, the dog's owner can view the information collected by the tag on a special social-networking site. Further contact can then be made if the owner thinks they might have something in common with the other dog owners they met that day.
The device can also be used to monitor a dogs behavior when he is at home. It will be able to detect when the dog is asleep, active, relieving himself and eating - and the owner will have real time access to this information via a web browser.
The product has been developed by SNiF - Social Networking in Fur - Labs Inc., and you can find out more by clicking here.

How to Get Your Puppy Used to Being Handled
Posted by Clare Bristow
Getting your puppy used to be being handled is an important part of puppy socialization . There will be numerous occasions in his life when he will be handled by people other than his owner - examples being your vet, dog groomers, and when he stays at the dog kennels.
It's a straightforward lesson to teach to your new puppy and it doubles as a quick health examination too.
After nearly three years together, Zoe, Fritz and I still spend 5 minutes doing this exercise at the end of the day. They are reminded it's OK for people to handle them, and I get to check for any unusual lumps and bumps and anything unpleasant stuck to their coat and paws. It also bring the three of us that bit closer together.
